The Movie Night Snack Stash was inspired by a conversation with neighbours last summer about how much we missed the experience of Movie Night when we’re unable to all be together. So, we started brainstorming and then talking about what might be involved with setting up a little outdoor theatre in the backyard so we could still be distanced and also enjoy a movie night together. Even simple ideas made sense, like hanging up an old sheet against the house, and of course we’d have to go find a projector. A true community collaboration with everyone pitching in their part!
Well, it didn’t take long before the topic of our favourite Movie Night foods popped up. We started imagining all the wonderful snacks and drinks we would enjoy. So, it’s my absolute pleasure to share with you some treats, great tastes, and ideas by Canadian Women in Food who’ve made this special Snack Stash ready to make a red-carpet appearance at your next Movie Night.
YOUR GOG BOX INCLUDES:
Caramel Corn I Julie is the owner of Zambonelli Fine Foods in Toronto, and the lead visionary of this gift box. Julie created Dukkah Pop while experimenting with a batch of caramel corn and added the toasted nut, seeds, and savoury spice experience that is Dukkah! It is sweet, salty, and a bit nutty with a great random spice flavour.
Dukkah I Julie discovered Dukkah when travelling years ago in Australia. Known for being a Middle Eastern ‘fast food’, Dukkah was served as an appetizer with bread dipped into olive oil. It was then Julie experienced the most amazing taste explosion of nuts, seeds and spices! Zambonelli Fine Foods has been making Dukkah ever since that first taste and Julie is excited to share this with other food lovers, along with recommending Big Night with Stanley Tucci as her favourite movie.
Olive Oil I Amira and her husband are from Tunisia and value quality food. Fascinated by the quality and taste of olive oil in their homeland, they decided to bring the hand-picked, genuine olive oil to North America. In creating Phoeapolis Organics, they are on a mission to provide you and your family with the best tasting and fully authentic olive oil. Amira’s movie recommendation is A Beautiful Mind starring Russel Crowe for the journey of self-discovery, and triumph over tragedy.
Pecans I Elisabeth Burrow, Founder/Chief Roaster of Jewels Under The Kilt- a nut orchard based in Fergus Ontario has included their Chipotle Pecans! From the first bite of this pecan, you taste the sweet caramel and buttery pecan. As you slowly chew just a little more; BAM, a hit of a smokey chipotle pepper! Elisabeth recommends the 2016 version of Tarzan because it’s bold, brassy, and focuses on the determination of women.
Spicy Pickled Carrots I Christine Manning, Founder of Manning Canning, an award-winning preserves and healthy beverages company based in Toronto. These Spicy Pickled Carrots are made from 100% Ontario grown carrots, they are hand peeled and hand packed (so as Christine’s Nonna used to say – they are made with love). But they also pack a little punch, so Christine suggests watching a movie like Kill Bill where a strong woman packs a few punches of her own!
Olives I Toot Kitchen is a collection of recipes, flavours and aromas of places where Sara and her husband lived, ranging from Iran and Poland to Mexico. Included in your Gifts of Goodness are Pomegranate Walnut Marinated Olives: Marinated olives in pomegranate molasses, aromatic herbs and a touch of garlic and walnut. Originally from the north of Iran, this classic side dish is used as a snack or added into salads or sauces to elevate flavours. For her movie pairing, Sara recommends the 2007 version of Caramel, for a romantic comedy centered on the daily lives of five Lebanese women living in Beirut.
Butter Salt Popcorn I Making high quality popcorn is a family affair for Cambridge, Ontario’s Becky Smollett and her two daughters at From Farm To Table Canada where they source Non-GMO ingredients, and their revolutionary baked popcorn has less hull and more crunch. The Butter & Salt flavour is dairy-free, peanut-free and gluten-free making it a treat all families can enjoy. Becky’s movie recommendation is The Princess Bride, as it’s perfect for watching across generations. It has adventure, magic, sword fights and romance!
Spice Blend I What would a movie night be without the Master of Suspense? Dial R for Ras, a tribute to Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, gets its inspiration from the film’s famous tagine scene. This Moroccan-style Ras el Hanout blend takes 17 different spices to perfect, making it wonderfully versatile. One of its best tricks? Absolutely irresistible popcorn. Lindan Courtemanche, Founder of The Gorgeous Spice Company, tests every scrumptious one-of-a-kind spice blend on popcorn. It’s the perfect medium, with lots of nooks and crannies for flavour to hide.
Coconut Chips I Founder and Holistic Nutritionist Tara Tomulka developed Rawcology’s line of coconut chips and grain free granolas because she was dissatisfied with the lack of truly healthy and delicious packaged foods available in the market and wanted to create healthier, better-for-you products using organic, plant-based, low sugar and allergy friendly ingredients. Enjoy our coconut chips while watching one of your favourite feel good movies, and may we suggest Ferris Bueller’s Day Off?
